I have no idea who owns the rights to these (Backstairs was licensed by this obscure company, Acorn Video, from the original producer, Ed Friendly) but here's a list of notable miniseries that have yet to be released (and how many I wonder, remember a lot of these?). Masada Vanished (the first multi...

Backstairs At The White House

The 1979 NBC miniseries "Backstairs At The White House", not seen anywhere since it's second airing in 1980, has finally come out on DVD in a four disc boxed set that is well worth picking up! Based on the memoirs of White House seamstress Lillian Rogers Parks (Leslie Uggams), the nine hou...

It's amusing to see Rod in that kind of context of game show host. Game show collectors like me also have him playing on the game show "You Don't Say" where he's even more wacky!

Battle Of Britain-DVD

Glad to hear that both music scores are available to listen to on this new release, but out of curiosity does this release restore the Churchill quote that had to do with the Battle at the end ("Never was so much..." or something like that) which was replaced in other DVD release by a Chur...

The episode that suffers most from truncation in terms of Hitchcock wraparounds appears to be "Baby Sitter" with Thelma Ritter. On that episode, there is no Hitch intro at all, it just goes straight from opening music to episode title!

Game Shows On DVD

"Fun for fans. I may be wrong but -- if memory serves -- this is the very first game show released in the DVD medium" That's true for a DVD set devoted to a game show but a couple vintage game show episodes have made their way out on DVD in other sets. Season 2 of the "Dick Van Dyke S...

Battlestar Galactica-Season 1 DVD

I won't be transporting the free-for-alls I've had at other places regarding the original Battlestar Galactica versus the new show, but I only want to comment on this point. "which die-hard fans of the old show objected to for about five minutes...until it was clear that the new version is a fa...

Well, I've had problems with some of these Universal sets. On "Adam-12" the final side wouldn't load on my main player, which is a relatively new Sony DVD/VHS combo player, and "Emergency" would freeze up repeatedly on it, but both played fine on an older combo machine. It just s...

Some more bad news to report on this set courtesy of the early reviews at Amazon.com. Not only are many customers again having the problem with defective pressings (I've been lucky so far but I have to admit I'm worried particularly after my nasty experience with the Adam-12 and Emergency sets. Univ...

Alfred Hitchcock Presents DVD Set

It's becoming increasingly evident that Universal has been sacrificing quality for quantity since they started opening up their vault of classic TV shows on DVD. While it's been nice to see so many titles, what hasn't been nice is how all of them have been barebones releases with minimal to no extra...

The one Brando scene I would so much love to see back in the movie is when Clark come back to the ruined Fortress to try and get his powers back and Jor-El appears to him and finally does so with a long lecture beforehand about how he'd anticipated this moment. I've read the script for the scene and...

According to the Toho forums I lurk at but don't belong to, "Frankenstein Conquers The World" and "War Of The Gargantuas" are now owned by Classic Media, the division of Sony that now has most of the Godzilla movies which they have not been doing right in their most recent DVD re...

Bumping this thread up to note that another classic Toho title "Atragon" gets a Tokyo Shock release in December. This, along with the still unreleased "Gorath" is regarded among the best Toho sci-fi efforts as opposed to kaiju monster flicks (though "Atragon" introduces...

I was never even aware that the first DVD release had gone OOP so why they would bother to do it the same way again with an inferior cover is beyond me.

76 King Kong DVD Reissue

I've noticed that Paramount now plans to cash in on the Jackson Kong craze by reissuing the 76 film on DVD (which was first released in 1999, it's first ever widescreen issue as it never had one on Laserdisc) with totally new cover art (I think they're squeamish about using the original poster with ...
