The New World was great!
I saw this film last night. I have not seen any of Terrence Malick's other films, but I mostly wanted to see it because I am intrested in the time period, as well as Native American cultures. I thought it was great. Leisurely-paced to be sure, and not made in a typical "Hollywood" fashion....

Re: INDY 4: Ford Gives a Deadline?
I agree with Harrison -- it's time to make it or forget it, before everyone is getting social security. The other thing is...when will this next Indy adventure take place? Both Connery and Ford (depite the hair color) are looking a little long in the tooth. It would have to be quite some time after...

Re: TRISTAN & ISOLDE
Very few reviews available for this Ridley Scott-produced pet project, which opens wide from Fox on Friday. I can't assume that's a good sign (or the mere fact that it's being released on January 13th), though the story line is intriguing and Kevin Reynolds -- for all his faults -- usually makes an...

Re: Memoirs of a Geisha reactions
I don't know many people who even know who Toru Takemitsu is! I have a soundtrack collector friend who once referred to Takemitsu as "that Chinese guy"! Takemitsu was an extraordinary composer, with an amazingly versatile range. Ran, Woman in the Dunes, Rikiyu, Rising Sun, Glowing...

Re: Memoirs of a Geisha reactions
The acting is strong and Williams' music works in the film but again, it seems "Americanized"- it's like I want a Toru Takemitsu score and I know I'm not going to get it. I've not yet seen seen/heard the score, but I know the feeling (I went thru this on Last Samurai). Takemitsu was one o...

I think if Tobe Hooper was the director of Poltergeist, I suspect his role was akin to that of Irvin Kershner on Empire Strikes Back, or Richard Marquand on Return of the Jedi -- in essence following the lead of a very hands-on writer/producer and executing that producer's vision. I know that Jerry ...

I disliked HGW's score to a great degree (as I documented on another thread on this site), but otherwise it has been the best movie I've seen so far this winter season. For me the film was otherwise so good I could almost excuse the score. I had to grit my teeth during the Enya / Lisa Gerrard-type ...

Chronicles of Narnia -- reactions?
I didn't go to see King Kong (I'm not a Peter Jackson fan I'm afraid). Instead I went to see THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE. I'm impressed. It admittedy lacks the atmosphere of the Harry Potter films, but the casting was right-on, particularly in the case of Georgie Henley as Lucy (who really ...

Re: Battlestar Galactica-Season 1 DVD
Well I didn't like the show at first -- the music was not (and still isn't) very good (PLEASE, lets put the deduk and wailing womens' voices away already!). I disliked (and still dislike) the goofy DUNE-style uniforms. (Why does every sci-fi show made in Hollywood have stupid-looking costumes -- I h...

Howard Shore is OFF King Kong
I just learned Howard Shore's score for Peter Jackson's upcoming King Kong has been rejected; James Newton Howard is to re-score the film. Says Jackson: "Howard and I came to realize that we had differing creative aspirations for the score of 'King Kong.' Rather than waste time arguing with a f...

I'm not as convinced as you are Eric. Schifrin is not exactly renowned for his work in this genre -- actually, has he EVER scored a movie like this? Well, Andy, I'm sure (as are others here) that whatever Schifrin comes-up with, it HAS to be better than the scores for the first two films! And Schif...

I think a new film version of King Kong is ridiculous. The original was made during an era when the world was still not nearly as well explored as it is today, and ape behavior was barely understood. But in the post-Dianne Fossey era, the notion of a gorilla falling in love with a human female is la...
