Re: Disney Buys Fox, Acquires Film/TV Assets, Fox Keeps Broadcast Outlets
I'm going to hope you're wrong on that. Disney already has channels it can use for that kind of thing. And I don't think with an acquisition like this that Disney is looking for just comic book franchises. For their streaming service, they will need a LOT of content, and that includes new content. I...

Re: STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI - Opens $12 Million Under TFA
The audience reaction I saw to Empire at the time in 1980 was positive, but nothing at the level of Star Wars. The kids I knew liked it, but they were a bit thrown by it at the same time. It's not that the movie was unpopular - it's that when it came out, many people weren't jumping up and down ravi...

Re: Disney Buys Fox, Acquires Film/TV Assets, Fox Keeps Broadcast Outlets
I agree with Andy that the biggest win Disney gets out of this situation is really having the library of Fox material to use for their upcoming streaming service. I believe that may have been the snag that has prevented the big Fox/Hulu deal from being completed. We had heard in July that thousands ...

Re: STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI - Opens $12 Million Under TFA
A couple of things here. First, regarding Empire Strikes Back: When it came out, it got mixed reviews. It did great box office, although not the tsunami of Star Wars. (And Lucas was nervous about this, because he'd just been burned by the poor showing of More American Graffiti). The LA Times gave th...

Re: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (and Galactica 1980) On Blu-Ray!
I believe you need to email Universal and have them send you a replacement disc. I have no idea if they ever corrected this in the full sets or if they just sent replacements to the people who asked for them. Not sure that this was a big enough seller for them to do more than that. If you email them...

Re: Disney Buying Fox? Ugh
One other wrinkle to this - if Disney acquires Fox, that means they have all of the rights to the entire Star Wars franchise immediately, rather than needing to wait until 2020. I doubt that would mean they'd do an "original version" Blu-ray release as some fans have hoped they would, but ...

Re: SUPERMAN 188-Min. Extended Version -- Coming to Blu-Ray!
Agreed on the first part with Andy. Anyone looking at this version knows exactly what it is. It's actually more of a teaching device when you compare it with the final cut. If I were teaching a class on film editing, I'd screen scenes from the Theatrical Cut of Superman The Movie and then show the f...

Re: Quentin Tarantino's STAR TREK Warp Speeds to Pre-Production & HARD "R" RATING
Eric P, I understand your revulsion toward film and TV productions, given how the overall culture has coarsened over the past 50 years. (And we should stay mindful that Hollywood is pretty much always BEHIND the curve on that kind of thing. Look at the Hollywood attempts to stay current in the 1960s...

Re: Quentin Tarantino's STAR TREK Warp Speeds to Pre-Production & HARD "R" RATING
Andy, I don't disagree about the current mindset of Hollywood. Don't disagree at all that there are plenty of aging nerds who demand Hard R-rated versions of their favorite teen entertainments. I just tend to ignore those guys because, well, I didn't pay that much attention to those guys in the firs...

Re: Quentin Tarantino's STAR TREK Warp Speeds to Pre-Production & HARD "R" RATING
I guess I’ll be the only one waiting to see what these guys actually come up with before I pass judgment on it. The tone of the Deadline piece is appropriately sarcastic. I’ve not been a fan of Tarantino’s movies over the past 15 years, but there was a time when he was an interesting and quirky writ...

Re: Warner Announces Major DC Shake-Up After JUSTICE LEAGUE Failure
I believe they also, correctly, removed the exec who’s been stubbornly continuing to waste their capital on these movies. Reading between the lines, it sounds like they’re stuck releasing the Aquaman movie and will push for a Wonder Woman sequel but will go a lot slower on everything else. Snyder wi...

Re: Bryan Singer Disaster: Fired From New Movie After Clashes With Star and Assorted "Issues"
Not sure what's really going on with Singer. We'll have to see if there's really going to be a big expose of anything. The behavior is certainly unprofessional. Even Zack Snyder dealt with his family tragedy in a professional manner, whether his movies show any talent or not. Singer, on the other ha...

Re: Quentin Tarantino to do Trek?
This really isn't the worst idea I've ever heard. Tarantino has stated he's a fan of the original series. I'd be curious to see what he comes up with. It certainly couldn't be as bad as the material I've watched them inflict over the past decade. Granted, Tarantino has no idea that I can see about w...

Re: Disney Buying Fox? Ugh
We'll have to see what happens. My instincts say that even if Disney acquires the Fox entertainment division, they wouldn't necessarily dump the non comic-book/franchise materials. There is a value in them holding on to outlets like FX and Fox Searchlight. In the same way that a network holds on to ...

Re: JUSTICE LEAGUE In All Kinds of Trouble?
Depending on how bad Aquaman is (and it appears to be terrible),WB will have a choice to make. I’d recommend they take the Dark Tower approach and just do a quick release followed by home video and hope for the best. The other movies are only in pre-production or development, so it will be a giant c...
