Re: rate the last movie you saw
THE ROCKETEER was the film that re-opened the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, after Disney gave it a multi-million dollar make-over, including a new marquee, a theater organ and one of the most gorgeous proscenium curtains I have ever seen. I went opening weekend and discovered that the balcony act...

Re: rate the last movie you saw
Recently watched the DeMille KING OF KINGS (original roadshow version-disc 1 of the Criterion set)-still one of DeMille's finest films with a performance by H. B. Warner as Jesus that is still my favorite. He is still for so much of the film that when the scene comes up where he drives out the money...

BIRDMAN: 6/10 Rented the DVD of this (the one video rental place we have in town never has the Blu-Ray in stock and got tired of waiting) and after watching have come to the conclusion that here is another film to admire but not really like. You all know the story and about the look of the film-I ad...

Re: 1776 getting restored for 2015 TCM Festival/Blu-Ray 6-2
Eric-let us know how this disc looks. If you give it a passing grade I will also order a copy, since I want as complete a version as is possible to get as well as looking and sounding more than passable.

2 films today... WHIPLASH: 8/10 Engrossing film about a young music school student (Miles Teller) who has dreams of being a great jazz drummer and the tyrannical instructor (J. K. Simmons, in a brilliant Oscar-winning performance) who torments, harangues, bullies and draws out the talent he hopes th...

Re: TWICE UPON A TIME (1983) Finally Coming to DVD
I remember watching it on HBO when I was in college and I thought it was hysterically funny. When they showed it again I had friends over to watch it and they loved it, too...then it disappeared. I had an ad slick that our college film bookers got before it came out and it intrigued me enough that w...

Re: Twilight Time - May & June Titles Announced
Bit the bullet and purchased the OOP THE TRAIN via ebay this week-when it was available for a short time the funds were not there, but since I have always loved it and that MGM postage stamp DVD just did not cut it, just had to have it. Paid $65 with free shipping and just looked at some parts of it...

1941 (Extended edition): 7/10 Having seen both versions of this first misfire from Steven Spielberg (saw the original version opening day and even owned a 16mm anamorphic print for a while) I find this one a bit more cohesive and actually better paced once it gets rolling. I will give the director p...

As I recall, EARTHQUAKE was in post long enough to enable Heston to make AIRPORT 1975 after he finished that but it still was released beforehand, so he had two disaster turkeys in one year!

Re: rate the last movie you saw
For me, the ultimate bad moment is when the people in the elevator die and we get this horrible looking "freeze-frame" with red paint splattered on it (looks even worse on the big screen-saw this 1st run in Cleveland in December of 1974 at the Fox Cedar Center where my dad was outraged at ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw
Tangerine Dream's scores for SORCERER and THIEF were incredible, and with Vangelis' work on CHARIOTS OF FIRE and BLADE RUNNER the best examples of synth use until so many composers pretty much ran that style into the ground through repetition and sheer laziness (see Team Zimmer).
