Wow -- this is just awesome, and something I wish Eon had done for a LONG, long time, and that's go back to the
classic Bond era for inspiration and not just some nondescript baddie poisoning the Bolivian water supply.

Mendes clearly has an affinity for the franchise's history and this just seals it. SKYFALL started going in that direction and I am much more excited about this film now than the likes of "Star Wars" and "The Avengers" or whatever else Disney is bringing us next year.

Too bad John Barry's not around to score it...and I can't say I am excited at all about hearing another Thomas Newman score...but otherwise, count me very, very impressed with the approach. SPECTRE hasn't been in a Bond film since...well, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN? And not in an Eon film since DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (unless you count the weird pre-credits sequence of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY which was basically a shot at Kevin McClory and NSNA I believe). I assume the long-running McClory/THUNDERBALL legal battle was the reason SPECTRE vanished from the official series, but whatever the case may be, this is great news. Plus Bond is driving an Astin Martin again too!

Very jazzed!!

Here's Variety's article:
LONDON — Sam Mendes, the director of the 24th James Bond film, revealed Thursday that the movie’s title would be “Spectre,” and that the cast would include Christoph Waltz, Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux.

Mendes, speaking from the 007 Stage at London’s Pinewood Studios, said that alongside Daniel Craig, who plays the iconic British spy in his fourth Bond movie, returning cast would include Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner and Ben Whishaw as Q.

The new additions are Waltz as Oberhauser, Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Mr. Hinx, and Andrew Scott (“Sherlock”) as Denbigh.

The 007 car will be the new Aston Martin DB10.

In the film, which is set for a global release on Nov. 6, 2015, a cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation, Spectre. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre.

The film, which starts principal photography Monday, will be shot over seven months at Pinewood Studios and several locations, which will include London, Rome, Tangier and Erfoud in Morocco, Mexico City, and Sölden, Obertilliach and Lake Altaussee in Austria.

The screenplay was written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

New additions to the Bond crew include director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema and editor Lee Smith, who both worked on “Interstellar.”

Crew from the last Bond film, “Skyfall,” who return include production designer Dennis Gassner and costume designer Jany Temime.

The composer is Thomas Newman, action specialist Alexander Witt is the 2nd unit director, and the stunt coordinator is Gary Powell. The SFX supervisor is Chris Corbould, and the visual effects supervisor is Steve Begg.

I'm looking forward to this.

I actually enjoyed Thomas Newman's score for Skyfall, as I had his score for The Debt.

Looks to me that Bond is in good hands these days.

Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux...damn. :D

I just wonder if they'll try to fold QUANTUM into the screenplay at some point...I would actually not mind if that turned out to be a splinter group offshoot of SPECTRE (it'd help stitch together the continuity of the Craig films, as lame as QoS was).

I still think "Mr. Hinx" is a dumb name...why name an "iconic" villain henchman so closely to Halle Berry's Jinx?

Also...no Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter? I enjoyed him in the role.

Still, I'm really excited about this one, although I'd prefer it if they brought back David Arnold on music duties (or cloned John Barry, whichever is more feasible  ).

Hopefully Arnold will be brought back when Mendes hands the reigns over to someone else.

Couldn't be happier - this film seems to have a lot of potential. I am very excited about it! I also liked Thomas Newman's score for SKYFALL so I am looking forward to what he does for this one as well.

I'm just happy that Benedict Cumberbatch and Alexandre Desplat are absent from the production.

Fascinating, as Spock would say...especially the comment that they have "no script" and a $350 million (!!) budget. What is this, the new TITANIC??

MGM Studios allegedly fought with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli to scale back the budget of the latest 007 film, “Spectre,” which started shooting this week. The disclosure was revealed in the latest leak of hacked Sony emails.

According to emails seen by CNN, “Spectre’s” budget was set at more than $300 million, but internal memos sent in early November by the president of MGM Studios, Jonathan Glickman, show he was applying pressure on Broccoli to cut costs substantially.

Glickman revealed that the budget “sits in the mid $300Ms,” but MGM was very keen to drag it back to $250 million. The shooting costs are $50 million more than the last film in franchise, “Skyfall,” the emails stated.

Glickman suggested ways to cut costs: For example, a night-time scene set at a villa in Rome could be shot in London instead; a fight scene on a train could use three carriages instead of four; and a “dramatic finale in the rain” could be dropped to “lower the cost of visual/special effects.”

Glickman also suggested that the producers could get an extra $6 million by showing “the more modern aspects” of Mexico to maximize “the Mexican incentive.”

“We recognize that this movie needs to build on the past few films — and there are expectations we must meet for the audience. Still, we must find further cuts,” Glickman said in an email, according to CNN. “This is not about ‘nickel and diming’ the production.”

Broccoli was not willing to compromise. She stated in her response that they “cannot find the cemetery or villa in the U.K.,” and refused to cut down the number of carriages in the train scene.

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal, who is cc’d on these emails, then sent a message direct to Glickman, stating: “It’s insane and you know with no script this movie is gonna go overbudget.”

On a positive note, Glickman pointed out that a product placement deal struck with Heineken is helping reduce the budget.

The hacked emails also reveal that when director Sam Mendes cast Andrew Scott (who plays Moriarty in “Sherlock”) as Bond’s intelligence agency boss “C,” they allegedly paid him $1 million less than they were going to pay “12 Years a Slave” star Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The emails also reveal the film features a “lesbian bad lady,” and confirm that Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the boss of secret organization Spectre, will make an appearance.

Re: Bond 24 - SPECTRE - Sony Hack Reveals Details on Budget/

#13 Post by AndyDursin »

Cat's out of the bag -- Gawker has their hands on all the internal Sony emails as well as the script.

Bottom line -- they are having all kinds of major, major problems with the third act of the film. And frankly, I think the story is at least underwhelming based on the description given herein -- maybe it'll work better on-screen, though.

Either way, numerous writers have been hired to repair the last act but it's still not there. Among the complaints from the studio are an endless stream of "fight sequences in the rain," Bond being tortured (again!), and still more CASINO ROYALE references. At one point one of the executives wonders why Bond hasn't "gotten over" everything in that film yet.

MAJOR SPOILERS below as the entire story is spelled out, in detail, with memos from executives who hate the finish of the movie as it currently stood -- at least as of late November.

Also confirmed -- a budget in the mid $300 million (!) range which would easily make it one of the most expensive films ever made.

Not having seen any of the Craig movies I had nothing to lose by reading the thing with the spoilers. Now that I'm finished, all the more reason for me to keep my record perfect with him.

Eric, it's a shame you haven't seen any of Daniel Craig's Bond movies. All three were good, with Casino Royale and Skyfall really standing out. I realize that a lot of people had issues with Quantum of Solace, but I've noted multiple scenes I really thought stood out - particularly the opera house sequence.

At the same time, I can respect that people might want to just watch the Connery Bonds or the Moore Bonds and call it a day - that's already 15 movies (counting Never Say Never Again, of course). I personally liked the Dalton Bond, but that one clearly didn't go over for the long haul. I never really knew what to make out of the Brosnan Bond. As for Lazenby, he was okay, but it was one of the great Bond tragedies that what could have been the greatest Connery Bond movie (and possibly the greatest Bond movie) ever wound up overshadowed by the need to replace Connery.
