THE BEGUILED Remake - Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

The original is so ODD, I can't see how a remake is going to work especially if director Sofia Coppola just plays up all the sexual tension and makes it even more obvious -- which is what you'd expect in this era of "feminism".

And if it has "the turtle scene" again, I'm definitely NOT going to be going!

Good cast though...

Colin Farrell is in talks to join Sofia Coppola’s remake of the classic Clint Eastwood pic “The Beguiled,” sources tell Variety.

The Civil War drama currently stars Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.

Coppola (“Lost in Translation,” “Virgin Suicides”) is writing and directing the film. Focus Features is on board as a distributor.

The original “Beguiled,” directed by Don Siegel and based on a novel by Thomas Cullinan, followed an injured Yankee soldier (plated by Eastwood) who finds refuge at an all-girls boarding school in the South during the Civil War and cons his way into several lonely women’s hearts.

If Farrell’s deal closes, he would take over the role played by Eastwood in the original.

Youree Henley (“The Bling Ring,” “Somewhere”) is on board to produce the project.

No production start date has been announced yet.

Farrell is coming off some of the best reviews of his career in Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Lobster” and also appeared opposite Anthony Hopkins in “Solace.” He can be seen later this year in a key role in the “Harry Potter” spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Farrell is repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment.

You'd think that the main reason to remake films from the past would be to cash in on the "brand-name recognition" of the title, but even hardcore Eastwood fans have probably never seen The Beguiled. :? Good, atmospheric film, but a very strange choice for a remake, even with a talented director and cast being lined up.

Maybe it'll inspire a release of Lalo Schifrin's fine score, though. :)

Boring and pointless?

I DON'T BELIEVE IT!

Don Siegel’s 1971 Civil War drama “The Beguiled,” starring Clint Eastwood as a wounded Union soldier hiding out at a girls’ boarding school in rural Mississippi, is a quintessential film of the early ’70s — and by that, I don’t mean it’s any sort of masterpiece. Far from it. It’s a crudely lit piece of baroque Gothic exploitation, “gripping” yet overwrought, and it basically has the plot of a porn film. Eastwood’s character falls into one bed after another, and he receives a shockingly cruel punishment when Geraldine Page, as the turned-on but repressed headmistress, makes the vengeful decision to amputate his injured leg for dubious medical reasons. “The Beguiled” is like a mediocre Tennessee Williams play staged by Sam Peckinpah as a third-wave-feminist horror film. Yet there’s no denying it’s a picture of its time.

So why would Sofia Coppola want to remake it? If you’re the sort of moviegoer who favors good taste over sensation, restraint over decadence, and decorous drama over porno leering, then you may actually like Coppola’s coolly pensive and sober new version of “The Beguiled.” But anyone else may wonder what, exactly, the movie thinks it’s doing.

Well, I was impressed with the original (which I didn't see until last year). It has its faults but is overall an effective thriller.

I have genuinely loved some of Sofia Coppola's work (like The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation) but this looks so dead on a arrival. And Colin Farrell is no Clint Eastwood.
