GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Netting Mixed Reviews

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Look close and most of the reviews are mixed -- but you'd never know it from the almighty Tomato Meter, where mixed reviews are counted as positives just the same. 87% fresh -- but it ain't as good as the first one, as almost any review points out.

Hollywood Reporter:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 plays like a second ride on a roller-coaster that was a real kick the first time around but feels very been-there/done-that now.

Time:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes at us grinning from ear-to-ear for nearly two and a half hours. It's high on its own supply.

The Verge:
Compared to its predecessor, Guardians 2 has a hollow emotional core, and the plotting feels clumsy. This movie doesn't have any real purpose, even as a bridge to other chapters in the Marvel story.

Here's Owen Gleiberman at Variety:
this time you can sense just how hard the series’ wizard of a director, James Gunn (now taking off from a script he wrote solo), is working to entertain you. Maybe a little too hard. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is an adventure worth taking, and the number of moviegoers around the planet who will want to take it should prove awe-inspiring. But it doesn’t so much deepen the first “Guardians” as offer a more strenuous dose of fun to achieve a lesser high.

I'm sure it's a fun movie and some friends of mine liked it. It's not going to be Shakespeare. ;)

Groot steals the show is easily the takeaway I'm gathering by consensus but I think that was a given.

I truly believe Marvel has hit their cinematic "peak" if you will. Disney will keep churning these out for years to come, but their blueprint is so set, you are guaranteed never to get a bad movie -- or a truly great one. It's all going to be right down the middle with them with minor variances (like the difference between the enjoyable yet forgettable DOCTOR STRANGE and the flirting-with-crap AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON).
