Blu-Ray B&M Exclusives - Manchurian Candidate,Heavy Metal

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

We've had separate threads on HEAVY METAL and MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, plus the Target discs like OVERBOARD, CUTTING EDGE, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, etc. -- but it seems like we ought to have a dedicated thread for the retailer Blu-Ray exclusives since POLTERGEIST II and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT are headed to Best Buy next month.

On the one hand, I think it's FAB that more Blu-Ray catalog titles are coming.

On the other hand, it sucks because I think retailer exclusivity cuts down on a title's visibility and overall sales. Not to mention no review copies for any press people :(

Double-edged sword, but it seems to be the way of the future. Thoughts???

What is the reasoning behind retailer-exclusive releases? How is this in the interest of content providers -- especially when titles are only available from someplace like Best Buy (which is overpriced and has lousy customer service)?

I'm guessing the studios get a kickback in return for retailer exclusivity on said catalog titles. It's not permanent -- usually 3-6 months, sometimes longer, sometimes less -- and the only thing I can figure is that the studios' "bonus" for entering into a retailer exclusivity agreement overrides how much $$ they'd make from a national retailer release. Because we're talking about catalog titles, i.e. HEAVY METAL, OVERBOARD, etc., not titles that would sell in mass numbers.

Meanwhile, the retailers like it because it drives up traffic for those type of titles.

I'm no fan of Best Buy either, but they sell lots of media titles, and they're everywhere, and for most of the country it's not hard to find one.

To be honest, the pricing has nothing to do with Best Buy either, the studio sets it. HEAVY METAL is $15 this week, and that would be perfectly reasonable for a Day One catalog title at Amazon or elsewhere.

Exclusives suck. I'll wait for what I want to get it on Amazon.
