Catalog Blu-ray Wave from Fox/MGM in France

#1 Post by John Johnson »

Fox Pathé Europa has announced its release slate for June, and it's pretty loaded for a summer month, with a dozen titles from the MGM catalog getting a Blu-ray release – most of them still unannounced in the US. From Marilyn Monroe to Vietnam to drag queens in the outback, hustlers and gigolos, there's something for everyone.

The schedule is as follows:

June 1:
The Misfits (John Huston, 1961)
Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959)
June 15:
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Stephan Elliott, 1994)
Be Cool (F. Gary Gray, 2005)
Casino Royale (various directors, 1966)
A Fish Called Wanda (Charles Crichton, 1988)
Get Shorty (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1995)
The Horse Soldiers (John Ford, 1959)
The Hustler (Robert Rossen, 1961)
Midnight Cowboy (John Schlesinger, 1969)
Platoon (Oliver Stone, 1986)
The Thomas Crown Affair (Norman Jewison, 1968)
Tigerland (Joel Schumacher, 2000)
Not all movies may be available in other territories.

Note that MGM is rumored to be close to shifting its home entertainment distribution business from Fox to another studio, possibly Sony (see Blu-ray.com, February 9). If true, Fox might be releasing some premium MGM properties before its distribution deal expires.

THOMAS CROWN is already available here (at Best Buy). MIDNIGHT COWBOY is coming in a couple of weeks too.

Interesting list -- nothing too earth shattering for me anyway -- but it's good to see it. Though, if they're going to be released there, they'll be released here too. I wouldn't go to the trouble of importing anything from MGM at this point, because whether it's a retailer exclusive or sell through, it'll happen.
