Weekend Box-Office 7/23 - "Barb-enehimer" Hype Fuels Year's Best Opening

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

This is probably going to set the formula for Hollywood can get people back into theaters -- stage "event weekends" like this one, which was so heavily hyped that I saw media outlets all over the spectrum running segments on it days in advance. A local news reporter was wearing a "Barbenheimer" T-shirt he bought somewhere as he did a report on "the big audiences going back to theaters this weekend!" -- so I don't know if it was just social media or studio hype machine (or both), but they definitely got the word out.

Plus BARBIE is a huge brand -- and got designated as the "movie women need to see this summer" -- while Universal did an excellent job selling OPPENHEIMER as part of "the Nolan brand", appealing to audiences who have kept on watching his terribly overrated fare like DUNKIRK and TENET and thinking all of it is brilliant.

Also interesting there wasn't any bounce for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE in its second week, so again, the marketplace remains limited to "movies people want to see" that specifically drive them to go. There aren't a lot of casuals who just decide "I'm going to the movies on Friday" and show up and buy a ticket for whatever without having already made a decision.

Unfortunately with the strike(s) it's likely this is going to also be "The Last Supper" at the box-office. Or close to it. Theater owners will have to hope this stuff sustains them for months to come.
