Weekend Box Office 3/11 - MARS NEEDS MOMS Bombs!

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Could this be the end of Zemeckis' "mo cap" movies? Apparently after Disney execs saw MARS NEEDS MOMS, they cut ties with Zemeckis (though they just finished YELLOW SUBMARINE which comes out in January)...certainly this could go down as one of the bombs of 2011...if not EVER. It cost between $100-$150 million and apparently won't return much over $10 million this weekend...

I'll update the numbers as we go through...

The movie that all of Hollywood is talking about tonight is Disney's Mars Needs Moms 3D. Why? Because the Dick Cook leftover is going to be one of the biggest money losers of all time. Costing $150M and, even with the higher 3D ticket prices, it'll be lucky to pull in $10M this weekend -- that's right all weekend. It's rare that any Disney toon flops at all, much less this badly. But my insiders say this movie is why, after Rich Ross screened it, Disney cut ties to Robert Zemeckis' Imagemovers Digital.

Wow, even a piece of crap like Gnomeo & Juliet has made nearly $100 million. Still, if these means the end of Zemeckis mocap movies, then hooray! 8)

Here are the numbers.

MARS NEEDS MOMS is indeed going to go down as one of THE all-time flops.

Interesting Sony is claiming BATTLE LA only cost $70 million (Nikki Finke doesnt believe it -- neither do I), but even if it's around that mark, they're going to make a massive profit off it. Even if it's every bit as bad as the reviews claim, every kid is going to go see it.
