PHANTOM MENACE John Williams WBZ Interview

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Dusted this off from my own archive -- a local Channel 4 Boston interview with John Williams (plus George Lucas and a visiting Steven Spielberg!) during the PHANTOM MENACE scoring sessions in London.

Awesome, thanks!

I'd seen this piece before -- but it's always worth revisiting!

Although as a film, The Phantom Menace never quite lived-up to to expectations, John Williams score genuinely exceeded expectations. I still consider it one of his greatest achievements.

George Lucas' prediction that Williams "just scored the last reel of the third movie" would seem to have made sense. So I always wondered why Williams only briefly referenced "Duel of the Fates" in the fight between Yoda and Palpatine (and I didn't think "Battle of the Heroes" had anywhere near the same visceral impact).

Back in 2005 I raised my questions regarding Revenge of the Sith's cursory nod to "Duel of the Fates" on the FSM board -- which prompted (who else?) Ford A. Thaxton to rip me a new one and tell me to "get a life!".
