LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14, 2012 – Paramount Pictures announced that principal photography has commenced in Los Angeles, CA on the sequel to STAR TREK from director J.J. Abrams. The film will be released on May 17, 2013 in 3D. The 2009 re-launch of the “Star Trek” franchise by Abrams was met with critical acclaim and a worldwide gross of over $385 million at the box office.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions present a Bad Robot Production of a J.J. Abrams Film. Returning to their posts on the Enterprise are John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin. They are joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.

Based upon “Star Trek” created by Gene Roddenberry, the film is produced by J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The script was written by Alex Kurtzman & Robert Orci & Damon Lindelof.

Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake are the executive producers. The director of photography is Dan Mindel, ASC, BSC. The production designer is Scott Chambliss. The film is edited by Maryann Brandon, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. The costume designer is Michael Kaplan. The music is by Michael Giacchino.

I just hope J.J. will keep the damn lens flares in check this time.

And hopefully a script that won't be just a KHAN rehashing...Trek was always about different types of science fiction stories, not just villain revenge plots.

Yes, it was quite a surprise to me too.

Got ease off that damn shaky cam or preferably get rid of it and tell the cinematographer to expand the color and light palette.

The thing is -- I WANT to like Giacchino. He seems like an intelligent and personable guy, he's an advocate for orchestral film music and one of the few out there who writes film music the way most of us like it. Unfortunately, he just isn't very good. That's really all there is to it...TREK was like two hours of nothing. SUPER 8 had a couple of okay moments but very little else in the type of score that ought to bring a LOT to the table. GHOST PROTOCOL was just like that. I mean, it's nice and all that he re-used Schifrin's themes (not just the main MI theme but others), but the score had nothing else going for it.

Ultimately, I think he's a guy who when he mimics another composer like Williams (MOH scores) or Barry (Incredibles), people seem to go batty over his talents, but he's pretty much a blank slate to me when off on his own, doing his thing, and that's a shame.

That's exactly how I feel about MG myself.

I wish he'd mimic Goldsmith or one of these other big names for Trek, as an example. If that's his gig then so be it. It works for him. Better then when he's not aping anyone.

It will be a real mistake if they're doing Khan, right after doing a Khan-like story, and a Khan-like story before that in "Nemesis."

Agreed 100%, Andy. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way, since Giacchino is building such a loyal following. I feel guilty about it for the very reasons you mentioned, but at the end of the day I'm just not engaged much by his music. It's competent and pleasant, but there's nothing particularly compelling about it.
