Cinevegas 2006

I have been attending the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival for the past week in Las Vegas. There have been some very cool movies here, amid all the other stuff. Would anyone be interested in hearing about these or is this way off track? Most of the films I have seen here do not have distributors yet, and some are so offbeat that I doubt they will get more than a quick arthouse release. But there are some real gems here...
If anyone wants to read about these, I'll be happy to post.

3 Highlights of the Festival:
DANIKA - Psychological thriller starring Marisa Tomei as a suburban wife & mother who is losing her grip on reality. There are a couple of pretty good scares in it, and it has a good payoff in it. This is a good late summer/Halloween release, if it can get one.
PARK - Ensemble comedy with Cheri Oteri, Ricki Lake, Billy Baldwin and a bunch of other people. Basically, it's about what happens during one lunchtime in a park in the middle of Los Angeles. It's really funny and it continually reinvents itself. And then the movie nearly gets stolen by Treach in the final half hour. When this movie gets released, it could easily go through the roof.
5 UP 2 DOWN - Hands down the best new movie I have seen in at least a year. The only recognizable actor for me is Kurt Acevedo, but the whole cast is good. It's a drama about a co-dependent couple of artists in New York who binge on cocaine with a regular system - stay up 5 days and then crash for 2 days. The trick with the movie is to look past the drugs to the real issues going on here. If this movie can get seen, it could easily merit Academy attention at the end of the year.
All 3 of these films had their world premieres at Cinevegas over the last few days, and they will likely go on to play at other festivals while they look for distributors. You can check out their webpages or their entries on imdb if you're curious.

David, thanks for the report! Any movie with Marisa Tomei is something I look forward to...

I believe that Universal picked it up -- at least I recall reading something to that effect on the SciFi Wire a bit ago, though I can't seem to find the link.
