lady in the water still does ok I think... Sixth Sense didnt make much in the beginning either, but staye there for months... so M Night surely still has faith...

Well, THE VILLAGE had an opening weekend of $50 million, so LADY IN THE WATER's $18 million has to be considered a disappointment no matter how you rationalize it. (Although M. Night will probably find a way to spin it as more evidence of his ongoing martyrdom.)

CLERKS II's opening was pretty typical for a Kevin Smith film. His highest opening ever was JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, and that only had an $11 million opening. Hell, since it only had a budget of $5 million, CLERKS II has already made its money back! I'm sure everyone involved is quite pleased (even if Joel Siegel is not).

SUPERMAN RETURNS continues to struggle toward the $200 million mark. As I'm sure you all know, I hope it makes it! From comments made at this weekend's ComicCon, it sounds like Bryan Singer really wants to push forward with the next installment. I hope he gets the chance.

Another thing to bear in mind that when The Sixth Sense opened, the Shamster wasn't an A-list director so there were no real expectations for it. It also didn't open in the summer season if I remember rightly.

One thing I love is his more demented fans insisting that casting himself as the Messiah in a film he wrote, produced and directed 'is nothing to do with him being arrogant - it's called acting.'

 Really??? No arrogance involved at all? Look- if you're going to take a crack at your critics do it more subtly than this. And I think MNS's films wil stand the test of time and will inspire people....but not this one! If anything, this will have people take a few steps back and take a good, hard look at the way he sees himself. He and George Lucas should make movies together- what an ego nightmare that would be! MNS, you didn't need to be so arrogant dude.

Actually, it was a summer movie (August 6th release date). I remember being at the 11 *AM* screening which was close to being sold out the day it opened! I figured word was spreading fast, and it did...I believe they did sneak previews prior to it opening, too, which had to have built up the momentum.

Ah, now that explains it - back then, we still had rationing, and our Summer only lasted two weeks: I think it was June that year, when we all rushed out into the streets and tried to work out what that big yellow thing in the sky was. Now, with global warming hotting up, our summer runs into a July heatwave (only 102degrees the other day).

However, I do remember talking to you at the time the film came out, and you were initially doubtful about the word of mouth because it was "from that guy who did that Wide Awke thing nobody saw and stars the kid from Bogus", so I think it's still fair to mark that one down as a sleeper - especially since August is the dumping ground month!

LOL yes! And those were the days when anything after July 31st was usually "the dumping grounds." These days, unless it's STEALTH, you can usually count on SOMETHING decent, at least in the first week of August. Beyond that, we're talking BROTHERS GRIMM territory (though I have to confess SNAKES ON A PLANE looks hysterical).

One thing about this MY SUPER EX GIRLFRIEND flop -- it's a Regency movie Fox is distributing, and to show how much Fox is behind it, they've been advertising next week's JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE movie (with Brittany Snow, Ashanti, and the young guy who used to be on "Desperate Housewives") endlessly on TV instead...with little promotion of Uma's latest flop by comparison.

But maybe they knew all along that Ivan Reitman's best days are way behind him, too...
