In spite of generally poor reviews SHREK 3 is opening huge. We'll see what kind of bump it gets on Saturday.

Shrek 3 will do nicely but be supplanted by Pirates 3. I suspect Shrek 3 will hold at a strong number two for a while after that. Spiderman 3 is just going to work its way down as the mixed word of mouth and reviews keep circulating.

Exactly. No record breaker here but a strong opening. I also suspect it will hold better than SPIDEY simply because, with kids movies, no parents bother to read reviews and word of mouth among kids isn't likely to be as poisonous as it apparently is for adults.

Here are the weekend results.

1 N Shrek the Third P/DW $122,000,000 - 4,122 - $29,597 $122,907,000 $160 1
2 1 Spider-Man 3 Sony $28,500,000 -51.0% 4,324 +72 $6,591 $281,858,000 $258 3
3 2 28 Weeks Later FoxA $5,150,000 -47.5% 2,305 +2 $2,234 $18,611,000 - 2
4 4 Disturbia P/DW $3,675,000 -22.4% 2,547 -559 $1,442 $71,323,000 $20 6
5 3 Georgia Rule Uni. $3,493,000 -48.4% 2,531 +8 $1,380 $12,614,000 - 2
6 6 Fracture NL $2,460,000 -16.7% 1,607 -595 $1,530 $34,712,000 - 5
7 5 Delta Farce LGF $1,840,000 -46.2% 1,931 - $952 $6,126,000 - 2
8 7 The Invisible BV $1,308,000 -43.5% 1,378 -565 $949 $17,661,000 - 4
9 10 Hot Fuzz Rog. $1,255,000 -26.9% 973 -263 $1,289 $21,079,000 - 5
10 17 Waitress FoxS $1,135,000 +72.8% 116 +51 $9,784 $2,176,000 - 3
11 9 Next Par. $1,131,000 -34.9% 1,008 -1,009 $1,122 $16,573,000 - 4
12 11 Blades of Glory P/DW $1,082,000 -25.4% 812 -624 $1,332 $115,437,000 $61 8

It seems most critics were not so impressed by Shrek 3, but you're right that most kids won't care and will pack in to see the film for weeks. I don't know if it will do Shrek 2 size numbers, though.

I think it broke the record as of today, did it not?

True, yes, I think for opening weekend, but I am not sure it will reach the total cumulative gross that Shrek 2 achieved, partially due to lukewarm reviews and sheer competition.

No it didn't break any record. The $122 mil for the weekend was well under what SPIDER-MAN 3 did a couple of weeks back.

I did read that it set a record in terms of openings for animated films. though... you know, somehow you can make any film number one at something! :)

Indeed it DID break that record! LOL, you're right, it seems every box-office champ has its own new #1 stipulation, though SPIDER-MAN actually did break the all-time record we mostly go by ;)
