Re: THE WIZARD OF OZ Gets a Lucas Sized AI Makeover

So in this Lucas special edition, does this mean the Wicked Witch throws the water first?

Re: AIRPORT 4K UHD Box Set - September

That is certainly possible, though in that case if Shout! could include an old TV airing of "Two Minute Warning" as a bonus, Kino could do likewise with "Airport '77" since there are decent looking ones out there. All they'd have to do is make an effort.

Re: AIRPORT 4K UHD Box Set - September

The TV cut of "Airport 77" though is something that can't be dismissed as unnecessary because in all honesty, that version is more comprehensible to me as a narrative than the theatrical one is. For years the only times I ever saw the film was in its TV version because NBC showed it about six times ...

Re: AIRPORT 4K UHD Box Set - September

Preorder on the Kino site is very agreeable at $79

If you want to wait for overseas releases, which I have to assume will happen because these are popular titles, it's possible the TV cuts could pop up there. Kino for whatever reason has never been a label that's dabbled into the TV cuts. Other ...

Re: AIRPORT 4K UHD Box Set - September

I am passing not only because they don't include the TV cuts, but because I have ZERO desire to listen to any commentary that Julie Kirgo is part of or any liner notes that she is the author of. Get set for her to go off about feminist subtexts or a lot of discourse on abortion for the first film ...

Tomorrowland (2015) 5 of 10

-I gave this film a look because I am a big fan of classic Disney theme park attractions and also have studied a lot about the 1964 World's Fair. I have to say that the opening scenes recreating the 64 World's Fair are excellent. They literally got the details of the ...

Re: BFI Screening Of Rare 1977 Star Wars Film Print

Disney doesn't even care about preserving its own past. And they've invested so much in pushing the woke agendas of the franchise's recent history that calling attention to the innocent era before all that existed wouldn't be in their self interest!

Re: BFI Screening Of Rare 1977 Star Wars Film Print

Lucas, over the years, has been rather firm about not screening the original and, when asked in 2004 by the Associated Press why he doesn’t simply release the original version along with the Special Editions, rather grumpily shot back, “The Special Edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

Some of the biggest names of 1960s TV tried their hands at film careers and found out the hard way that their TV success couldn't translate beyond that (Steve McQueen had been a TV star in the late 50s so he doesn't count). Not just Van Dyke, but Mary Tyler Moore flopped as did Richard Chamberlain ...

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) 5 of 10
-I saw this film multiple times on TV as a child between the ages of 5 and 10 I think. I loved it then (yes, I found the Child Catcher genuinely scary), but then when I got older I stopped watching it except maybe once in the 90s and until last night never saw ...

Diamonds Are Forever (1971) 7 of 10
-I waited a few days after seeing OHMSS to see this because some detuning from that film is needed to appreciate DAF more. You have to view the film in the context of the producers trying to forget as much as possible the previous film, which was understandable ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I'll agree YOLT is watchable and can be fun as I think even the weakest of Bond films pre-2002 can be fun (except maybe "Licence To Kill"). I think what this marathon demonstrates though is how the weaknesses stand out if you engage in a quick marathon sequential viewing of the franchise and that ...

You Only Live Twice (1967) 6 of 10
-Honestly, this is the one film in the entire series first decade you could easily skip without missing a beat. It's not just the fact that Connery is clearly bored with the role, it's the fact that the script and story is leaden and I suspect part of that is due ...

Re: rate the last movie you saw

I'll only reiterate re: Polanski that even if I grant every point about the legal system giving him a bum steer, that is no justification for becoming a fugitive from justice. And while his career may have suffered to a degree, he still got to make movies and live a glamorous life in exile in Europe ...

Re: BFI Screening Of Rare 1977 Star Wars Film Print

When Lucas is the ONLY filmmaker who adopts this middle finger approach to film preservation, it reveals again there's a petty reason for his behavior having nothing to do with his conception of "art". I've put forth the theory before advanced by others that he doesn't want Marcia to get another ...
