So many good performances, even when he was "cashing the check". A true professional and one of the greats.

He lived abour 30 minutes from me. Well known for supporting the community, along with being one of the all time great actors.

William Goldman, in his his book "Adventures in the Screen Trade" praised Duvall for being a "character actor" instead of a "star" -- i.e. Duvall was always willing to play characters with deep flaws, who were even dislikable.

He singled-out Duvall's role in The Great Santini, as "a loser and an unsympathetic son of a bitch when he's lost" (highlighting this particular scene) -- as the kind of part a star would never take unless there were major re-writes to make the character sympathetic.
