Fox finally shows up again for Blu. Big.

#1 Post by Eric W. »

Finally.

The wait was worth it IMO:

Sources: Blu-Ray.com, High Def Digest had some link that keeps going up and down, DigitalBits, and others.

Fox and MGM have revealed 29 upcoming Blu-ray releases. Included are 19 catalog titles from Fox and MGM, and 10 new release titles to be sold day-and-date with their DVD releases. These titles include 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer' and 'Live Free or Die Hard'. The remainder of the day-and-date titles is expected to be announced shortly, as well as specs for each release.

October 2nd
The Day After Tomorrow
Master and Commander

October 9th
28 Days Later
Amittyville Horror
Edward Scissorhands
The Fly
From Hell
Robocop

November 6th
A Bridge Too Far
Battle of Britain

November 13th
I, Robot

November

Die Hard 2: Die Harder
Die Hard With a Vengeance
Red Dawn

December 4th

So now you have had big news for both BD and HD-DVD today.

Looking like a real race is on finally, isn't it?...

So it took THIS to get them off their fannies? ;)

That's all good news for BD, obviously, but it kind of comes as a little weak after the Paramount bomb -- at least half of those titles were announced for spring time. If 007 was part of it I'd be more excited.

BUT...I look forward to seeing MASTER & COMMANDER in HD plus all of the DIE HARDs. That goes without even saying :)

Also I'd be interested in seeing what extras and codecs Fox is going to be using. Those $39 discs with a trailer aren't going to cut it, so I hope they step up their efforts (as well they should!! :).

Seriously. Fox needs to get over themselves a little bit. Their DVDs have always tended to be the most expensive ones out there and now we see it again here. Sure, these are MSRP prices we're talking, but c'mon!

I suspect Fox will use AVC/MPeg 4 with a nice high bitrate like they have been. Probably see LPCM and/or DTS HD Master Audio (whatever that's called) and possibly some multilanguage tracks.

That's the beauty of having a BD50 disc: Plenty of space to optimize everything.

Still shouldn't cost $40 a pop MSRP.

It is, but a lot of studios -- especially them -- have seemed less than interested in making use of it...like those earlier BD discs that had nothing but trailers on them, or worse, were BD-25's with MPEG2 transfers.

Going back over some of them recently, HOOSIERS in particular really looks soft, and there's nothing on it! It's better than the regular DVD but it really is a bad HD transfer now that I've been watching catalog discs over the last few months.

I hope they get their act together. It's been forever since ERAGON! :)

What really disappoints me, BTW, about the SPIDER-MAN Blu Ray box is the first two movies have almost nothing on them :( I'll still recommend it just to watch the movies in HD, but that's pretty disappointing when the potential is there (like the POTC films) to do so much more.

The Fox slate is also a little too heavy on '80s and '90s horror for my tastes. MASTER AND COMMANDER and the DIE HARDs will be great, I'm sure, but THE FLY, DAY AFTER TOMORROW, FROM HELL, etc...I haven't been crying out to see those in HD to be honest ;)

^^ Fair points.

To that end, and this goes for both formats: We're still only in August.

I think we'll see plenty more get announced for the holiday season. :)

It's going to be an HD avalanche of goodies this December, I've glad I made all the major "tech purchases" last year to afford whatever I don't receive for review. :)

I preordered BLADE RUNNER (the box) and the Kubricks -- I will probably get some of the latter and probably the straight, plain release of the former, but I'm not risking it. I saw those prices at the Warner Store and couldn't pass 'em up ;)

I'm looking forward to that in BD, no doubt. Hopefully they won't forget to tag the alternate score and the other extras along with it (though with Fox I wouldn't hold my breath).
