Weekend Box Office 8/13

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

STEP UP is a high school drama and obviously performed way above expectations. No other real big news, except the same audience indifference UNITED 93 had seems to be holding true for WORLD TRADE CENTER -- as I've written before it was FAR too soon for these movies for most viewers. ZOOM, meanwhile, was a disastrous turkey for Tim Allen, and wasn't marketed OR screened for critics!

Step Up 8.6 8.6
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 7.2 75.4
World Trade Center 6.0 13.7
Pulse 3.4 3.4
Barnyard: The Original Party Animals 3.0 27.1
Pirates 2.9 387
Zoom 1.5
The Descent 1.4 14.3
Miami Vice 1.3 51.8
John Tucker Must Die 1.0 33.8

And the other thing with WORLD TRADE CENTER -- with so much real terrorist activity still going on, especially what happened in England last week, I think a lot of folks are getting enough of the situation on the news...it makes sense for audiences to want to escape from that.

I have no desire to ever see either of those films. Give it maybe 20-30 years and then you can use 9/11 as the backdrop against dramatic filmic events. Do it now and it just seems crude. I especially don't like how the voice over on the trailer with the music makes it sound so mushy and sappy.

The UK chart was interesting this week. Miami Vice dropped from no. 1 to number 3, beaten by holdovers Cars and POTC2. But the big surprise was the opening of Career in the Crapper - sorry, Lady in the Water. After that werewolf movie ad campaign, it opened at number 9 despite going on wide release!
