MAGNIFICENT SEVEN - "Music by James Horner," Trailer

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

Good cast lining up under the direction of Washington collaborator Antoine Fuqua (Equalizer, Training Day):

It’s been over a decade since Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua patrolled the mean streets of Los Angeles in “Training Day” and it looks like that team is looking to head to the wild west for their next collaboration.

Sources say the Oscar-nominated Hawke is in final negotiations to join Washington in MGM’s “Magnificent Seven” remake with Fuqua directing.

Chris Pratt and Hailey Bennett are also on board to star.

The 1960 original, itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. It centered on seven gunslingers who protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws.

The script was most recently reworked by John Lee Hancock, with “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto writing the previous draft.

MGM is hoping the pairing of Hawke with Washington leads to the same success the two saw on their crime drama, which overperformed at the box office and led to both men receiving Oscar nominations with Washington eventually taking home the prize.

Hawke is coming off his Oscar nominated role in “Boyhood” and has several upcoming projects that include Andrew Niccol’s “Good Kill” and the docu he directed, “Seymour: An Introduction.” He is repped by CAA.

This may be the biggest gut-punch of them all... :(

FUQUA: Horner had already written music for MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

I agree. I was sorry Denzel lowered himself.

I'm skeptical Horner composed the entire score -- specifically timed to the scenes of an as-yet unfinished film (especially an action picture). It seems more likely Horner composed the principle themes.

Then again Horner may have created a fully-orchestrated musical portrait based on his impressions of the script, which he planed to adapt to the finished film when the time came (Maurice Jarre did something similar for The Mosquito Coast).

In any case, I hope we get a release of whatever it is he wrote!

This is what I'm thinking. I hope that Fuqua hires someone to adapt what Horner did write so it can be used in the film (with a "themes by James Horner" credit)...maybe one of his frequent orchestrators like J.A.C. Redford or Don Davis. Then again, I'm sure that there will be pressure to also use Elmer Bernstein's theme from the 1960 film, which would make for some confusing credits ("music by J.A.C. Redford, based on themes by James Horner, original Magnificent Seven theme by Elmer Bernstein" :? ).

Yeah, he wrote themes based on his reading of the script. I think the movie is still shooting or just finished shooting.

I agree with MJ, it'd be nice if one of his orchestrators scored the finished product working off his material. The problem is Horner has such a distinctive voice, that I wouldn't want the likes of Giacchino or someone along those lines coming in and handling it...but someone familiar with Horner's style and arrangements might be the way to go. I guess it's all up to Fuqua.

It's just such a shame Horner perished for a number of reasons -- a score like THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN being one of them! The fact that Horner had just cultivated a new relationship with a major director like Fuqua (major in that he's filming all kinds of A-grade studio films) is one of the reasons I'm so depressed, because it shows how close Horner was to staging a big comeback in commercial fare.

Sadly, we'll probably just get one of the Gregson-Williameses to write 2 hours of crap. :(

I'd like to think Fuqua will use what James Horner provided -- he certainly seemed overwhelmed by the effort Horner made for the film. I just hope its completion will be given to Horner's regular orchestrators, who know his style inside-out, and not, as you say, someone like Giacchino.

Michael Kamen passed away while scoring Back to Gaya, which was ultimately was completed by his orchestrators, so there is a precedent...

Sounds like there is indeed a chance based on these comments:
“I just found out a couple days ago his team flew out here to Baton Rouge, and they brought me all the music from ‘Magnificent Seven,'” Fuqua said. “He had already wrote it for me based on the script.”

Fuqua called the music for the 2017 Western “glorious"
So perhaps there is hope if the music is "glorious" that one of Horner's orchestrators could work on the score...especially if his crew went so far as to fly down there to give him the music.

Fuqua also said he scored SOUTHPAW for nothing, and paid his team out of his own pocket.

Nice to see Horner's themes are going to be used by one of his associates. Great job by Fuqua paying tribute to him.
Simon Franglen is currently recording his music for the upcoming The Magnificent Seven remake. The score is based on themes that late composer James Horner wrote before he passed away last summer. The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, King Arthur) and stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia Rulfo, Martin Sansmeier, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard. The film is based on the 1960 classic western of the same title, which was itself based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and follows seven gun men in the old west who gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves. Roger Birnbaum (Rush Hour, The Vow, The Count of Monte Cristo) and Todd Black (The Pursuit of Happyness, A Knight’s Tale, The Equalizer) are producing the project. Franglen has collaborated with Horner as an arranger, score producer and synth programmer on numerous scores over the last seven year, including Avatar, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Karate Kid, Wolf Totem and The 33. He also produced the late composer’s last score for Fuqua’s Southpaw. The Magnificent Seven will be released on September 23, 2016 by Sony Pictures.

This has some real potential...glad to hear Horner's contribution will be used, the cast is great, and Fuqua is a generally solid filmmaker. Plus, two of the best Westerns in recent memory were remakes (3:10 To Yuma and True Grit). I just wonder if Elmer Bernstein's theme will make a cameo appearance (hell, it popped up in Hardcore Henry recently  ).

The European teaser credits officially read:
"Music by James Horner, Additional Music by Simon Franglen"
I'm excited just seeing those words one last time!
