Weekend Box Office 8/6 - MEG 2 Chomps Way to 2nd Place
Not a terrible MEG 2 opening, close with TMNT, as HAUNTED MANSION craters and BARBENHEIMER hype fuels the top 2 spots.

Re: Weekend Box Office 8/6 - Newcomers Can't Stop the Barbie
MEG 2 surprised everyone and finished a strong 2nd on the way high end of estimates. BARBIE effect in motion for WB.
SOUND OF FREEDOM is going to domestically outperform both Indy & Mission Impossible.

When was the last time the top four at the weekend box office took in at least $30 million (or just under)?

Looks like Little Mermaid wasn't that big of a failure after all?

It's still a miss. With a $250 mil budget, usually you've got to do 2X-3X that number just to break even, and that's basically where they are -- or maybe not even since promotion was so heavy on this film. Since half is coming from overseas, under $600 mil worldwide (or just under) means they either lost a little at worst, probably broke even at best. So no, not THE worst performance of this summer, but it's not what they were aiming for.mkaroly wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 4:50 pm Looks like Little Mermaid wasn't that big of a failure after all?
The way these are working now, if you're spending $250-$300 mil on a movie, the aim is $1 billion worldwide to really be profitable. That's why Disney's had such a rough summer, none of their films hit like BARBIE did, and also in that perspective, shows why DUD OF DESTINY is such a disaster.

That's a good question, it's probably been a while. And also, possibly, a long time before it happens again.Monterey Jack wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 1:11 pm When was the last time when the top four at the weekend box office took in at least $30 million (or just under)?

This is why the biggest success stories this summer have been the franchise pics that have capped their budgets around $100 million, like Super Mario Bros., Barbie, Across The Spider-Verse and TMNT: Mutant Mayhem ($70 mil!). Even with advertising taken into effect, each of these cost under $200 million, and all have turned a healthy profit. Meanwhile, even a movie which opened soft and had surprisingly good legs (Elemental) will still be lucky to break even because it cost $200 million.AndyDursin wrote: Sun Aug 06, 2023 5:09 pmIt's still a miss.
