TERMINATOR GENISYS - 6/26/15 - Cameron Approved

#1 Post by AndyDursin »

As one of the few, I suppose, who's actually liked every one of the films in this series, I'm very interested in seeing how this proposed new trilogy turns out. Under Annapurna Pictures, who have turned out a good amount of decent films over the last few years, I think this has a fighting chance as well. (James Cameron gets the rights back in 2019)

Arnold is supposed to be onboard -- rumor is part of this next film is a period 1940s/50s set piece. Other hot rumor is Dwayne Johnson, savior of all "franchises in need of rehab", is potentially going to be involved as well.

Paramount has confirmed the long in the works deal to cofinance and distribute the reboot of James Cameron’s Terminator franchise creation. Highbrow picture maker Megan Ellison spent over $20 million for the rights in 2011, and the project didn’t go very far. Things finally started percolating when Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures joined forces with brother David Ellison, whose Skydance Productions has a deal with Paramount and makes popcorn movies. Avatar’s Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier have been working on the script for months. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the title character and the hope is to get at least two movies done before North American copyright reverts back to Cameron, who might want a fortune or might want to retire the franchise. Here’s the announcement:
Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures have jointly announced they will partner on a rebooted “TERMINATOR” movie, to be released by Paramount Pictures on June 26, 2015.

The first in a stand-alone trilogy, “TERMINATOR” will be produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna and David Ellison of Skydance. Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Skydance will serve as executive producers. Laeta Kalorgridis (“Avatar,” “Shutter Island”) and Patrick Lussier (“Drive Angry”) are attached to write the screenplay.

Launched in 1984 with star Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title character, “TERMINATOR” spanned 3 subsequent films, which have earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

David Ellison most recently executive produced, along with his partners at Paramount, “World War Z,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. A 5th installment of in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise is in active development, along with a 3rd film in the “G.I. Joe” franchise, among other films.

Megan Ellison most recently produced the Academy Award®-nominated “Zero Dark Thirty,” “The Master” and executive produced “Spring Breakers” via her Annapurna Pictures banner and has David O. Russell’s “American Hustle,” Spike Jonze’s “Her,” and Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher” set for release later this year.

We don't need a reboot, we just need another film in the series to follow Salvation. This is a series that doesn't need Schwarzenegger anymore (his amusing digital "cameo" in Salvation aside), but I suppose he needs this series to help rebuild his film career, so they have to "reboot" it to shoehorn him in there again.

The term "Reboot" is thrown around so often now, used in so many different ways, that I take its usage with a grain of salt. I can't imagine this isn't going to connect to the other films. What they're going to do is set up another series of films with mostly new cast and characters I'm guessing...which I don't have a problem with. Bale is never going to come back, so that's out of the question. Might as well move ahead.

It's definitely not a remake, and it's not going to pretend the other movies don't exist -- at least I wouldn't bet on that. So my guess is that this is basically a sequel with mostly new personnel in a different time frame. These days, that's designated a "reboot", but it's not a "reboot" like RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, which is completely independent of the other films. Or MAN OF STEEL. Or STAR TREK, which is an alternative universe type of deal. Either way I hate the term!!

Anyway I'm not hating on Arnold. He's not supposed to BE the terminator, he's still in good shape...might be interesting to see him play a totally human character to give some connection to the older movies. Add The Rock in there in Arnold's older part (or something like that) and that could be compelling to see two "generations" of action heroes in the same picture in contrasting roles.

I have been one to complain the loudest about revisiting "older" films...but the more I think about, the more it seems like the industry is doing a throwback to early Hollywood cinema. There were a lot of remakes of silent films when "talkies" were all the rage...Ben-Hur, Phantom of the Opera, Robin Hood, etc. Maybe this is the new era - except instead of going from silent films to talkies, we are going from low budget special effects extravaganzas to CGI special effects extravaganzas...generally speaking...maybe? Lol...

A new Terminator TV series has been announced from the same team as the movie and will be developed concurrently alongside the film and, apparently, air at the same time.

I honestly find this concept intriguing, as the whole time travel element is something that I think they'll be tapping into (as a means of rebooting the series particularly):
The TV series will follow a critical moment from the first Terminator film (1984) and, where the film's story goes one way, the upcoming series will take the same moment in a completely different direction. As the rebooted film trilogy and the new TV series progress, the two narratives will intersect with each other in some surprising and dramatic ways.

I frankly don't understand why they're going back to the well with this again.

The 1984 movie, still the best one of the bunch, pulls the best parts of its plot from Harlan Ellison's "Demon with a Glass Hand", but it benefits from some surprisingly effective action directing by James Cameron on a low budget. The VFX sequences are pretty funny to watch in all their low-tech glory, but the live-action material in present-day is quite good at times. The 1991 movie replays most of the 1984 beats, although with an actual budget this time around, thus allowing Cameron to stage much bigger action sequences. Past that, the whole thing gets progressively wackier to my eye.

There really isn't a lot of story to this idea, so it really feels like each new chapter in it is just restating what we've already heard 2-3 chapters earlier.

That said, I had the pleasure of working with actor David Andrews on JAG in 2004-5. I took him to task for his behavior in Terminator 3, asking him "Why the heck did you press the button? Do you always do what everyone tells you to do? Don't you think before turning things like Skynet on? Did it occur to you that now we're all being hunted by killer robots because YOU pushed a button?!!!" This was almost as much fun as one moment when I had the pleasure of working with Billy Dee Williams...

David,
Going off topic slightly, I enjoyed JAG most when Trevor Goddard was in the show. Sad and tragic what happened. I was a big fan of his character.

Emilia Clarke from GAME OF THRONES (perhaps no surprise with Alan Taylor directing) has been cast as Sarah Connor -- there's a bit of the premise revealed in this article as well:
This time, in a time-spanning story that also will have a young Kyle Reese and an adult Connor, the Terminator robot is tasked to protect Sarah Connor from childhood and into young adulthood.

Very intrigued by the story line. Playing with time travel enables the writers to mix up and use elements from the old movies -- a very wise move a la BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II (one of my favorite sequels)

http://moviehole.net/201473984exclusive ... terminator
Taylor’s film will take us back and forward between the future, 1984 (“The Terminator”), 1991 (“Terminator 2 : Judgement Day”) and other important and influential time periods in the life of the Connor family.

Firstly, we will indeed be revisiting the events of the original 1984 film again. The ‘Terminator’ from the future will arrive on earth, attack some punks (keen to see who they get to play ‘Bill Paxton’), and then slaughter his way through a bunch of Sarah Connors’ – until he finds the correct target. And all the characters that appeared in the Cameron original, like Detective Hal Vukovich (played by Lance Henriksen in the original), Lieutenant Ed Traxler (played by Paul Winfield way back when), Sarah’s roomie Ginger (Bess Motta in the ’84 film) and, yep, even Pugsley the Iguana, return. So, yep, we’ll likely get to see Schwarzenegger back in the leather jacket and cool sunglasses he wore in the original. And, of course, Kyle Reese (Courtney) volunteers to go back to 1984 and save Sarah – just as he did first time around. But don’t expect everything to work out like it did in the original.. something is going to play out different.

And then, we’ll also be taken back to the events of the sequel. The scene where the T-1000 (played by Robert Patrick in “Terminator 2 : Judgement Day”), posing as a cop, visiting John Connor’s home, where he meets – and consequently kills – foster parents Todd (Xander Berkeley) and Janelle (Jenette Goldstein), is in there. As are several other key moments.

And then we’ll be going back to moments we haven’t seen on film before – such as scenes with young Sarah and her parents.

Obviously, revisiting these events is intentional. As is usually the case with a film using the alternate timeline device, obviously something hasn’t gone right (maybe the Terminator succeeds in killing Sarah this time, around? I don’t know – just guessing) or something that happened in the past has greatly changed the future, meaning Connor’s resistance crew from the future have to ‘go back’ again. I’m not privy to all the why and how – just the when’s at the moment.

I’m still unsure how they’ll explain Schwarzenegger’s ‘older’ look (or maybe they won’t?) but one thing I’m pretty certain is, this will play super fresh and regenerate the series – thus the two sequels the filmmakers already have planned. Having only been told a miniscule amount about it, “Terminator : Genesis” sounds magnificent. This could quite possibly be the film of 2015.

I wonder if Terminator: Genesis does what NintenDon't.

And it'd be nice if this wasn't a complete reboot and acknowledges the previous movies, and the use of additional time travel elements means it's possible. I still think that Terminator 3 and Salvation were good films and worthy entries in the series.

Indeed, as do I. I've actually enjoyed every film in this series.

Clearly this isn't a complete reboot. When dealing with time travel there's endless things you can do -- and I've long felt the series would end up back in the '80s. Especially after Salvation -- there's really nowhere else to go after the world's blown up but back in time.

Well, it worked for the Planet of the Apes movies!

I liked all of the Terminator movies too. I also enjoyed the TV series.

Glad to hear some positive things about the last two Terminator films...most message board geeks sneer about them and say "If it's not James Cameron, it doesn't count!" T2 remains the most poorly-paced film in the series, with a full HOUR in the middle with virtually no action and the villain completely vanishing! It's also the first of Cameron's "lecture" movies, where his message about nuclear holocaust becomes incredibly heavy-handed (although at least he was wise enough to jettison the HORRIBLE alternate ending, with Linda Hamilton sporting old-age makeup about as convincing as Billy Crystal in The Princess Bride  ). T3 is certainly not perfect, but there's not an ounce of fat on it, the action sequences are expertly-mounted, and the ending is bleakly daring. Salvation has an overly-histrionic performance by Christian Bale ("We are DEAD, we are DEAD, we are ALL! DEAD!!!"), but it also has top-notch action sequences and excellent special effects (the nifty Schwarzenegger "cameo" was a definite highlight). Both continue the story in clever ways, and are worthy additions to the "lore" of the series.
