Re: NOSFERATU from Robert Eggers - Christmas

Finally sat down and watched it myself.

6.5 from me as well.

I'll give it points for its arresting imagery, impressive sets and exquisite lighting -- it's gorgeously shot, no question.

On the other hand, the street sets look like sets -- you can tell the brickwork is sculpted and not real. Werner ...

Re: WE'RE NO ANGELS (1989) - Andy's Cinematographe Blu-Ray Review

I didn't bother with We're No Angels when first released. While I've enjoyed occasional performances by the film's two stars ( Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Goodfellas spcifically) I was never a huge fan of either. Plus the subject didn't really grab my attention.

On a lark I decided to stream ...

Re: James Bond 007 Reset Thread: Denis Villeneuve Signs On

But Cruise did something REALLY f*cked-up to his face over the last few years.

In fairness, in the upper image Cruise has been primped by a top-tier makeup artist and hair stylist, and lit and photographed by an A-list cinematographer.

In the lower image he is at a public event, and shot in ...

Re: JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH - July - Trailer

I'm roughly in-between with a 7.

No, there's nothing new here, but it's pulled-off with the requisite suspense and thrills. I didn't care for Desplat's score, but at least it wasn't power chords and "braaaams". The cast is very good, character development is satisfactory. While I found it slow at ...

500 movies?

I wouldn’t have thought 500 movies had even been made since 2000!

In any case, I went back and swapped out Match Point for The Patriot! 😁

Oh blast!

I forgot The Patriot! 😩

That may well be the film I most admire from the past 25 years!

I wonder if I can go back and change it.

Re: NY Times Reader Poll-Best Films of thre 21st Century

I have to confess -- it wasn't hard to compile a list, and I admit not all the films on my list what I'd call truly "great".

I'd have a much-harder time compiling a Top Ten list of 1980s movies (and that would consist entirely of films I do consider truly great).

Re: CONGO - The 30th Anniversary Revisit

Goldsmith's score is solid...by his 90s standards at least (and it's better than First Knight).

Still, whenever I hear that song he wrote with Lebo M, I keep expecting to hear a woman with a Jamaican accent saying "Dial 1-800-SANDALS".

Re: James Bond 007 Reset Thread: Denis Villeneuve Signs On

While I really liked Skyfall , Bond films are not the place for "auteur" directors.

The draw of a Bond film should be Bond , and maybe the actor playing him, not an auteur with a distinctive style. Bond movies are best served by journeyman directors, not auteurs who insist on "adapting" Bond to ...
